My Philosophy
Each one of my students is important to me, and I put a great deal of thought and care into every lesson I teach. I strive to be sensitive to the goals, learning styles and temperments of my students.
The sound of the flute is like a human voice. I believe a great flutist plays, and thinks, like a singer. I teach a balanced and natural body position, full and relaxed breathing, and a flexible, forward embouchure. After a student has mastered the basics of playing the flute, I emphasize a resonant tone and a singing vibrato. Then, it is time to explore the many timbres and shades of color that can make the music come alive! Through each stage of a student's learning, I feel it is important to study the repertoire from the inside out - small details like rhythm and articulation to the larger issues, like style and emotional intent.
I teach all ages and levels: young students just starting out, middle school and high school students striving to do well in a school and competition setting, and adult students wanting to enrich their lives through the beauty of music.
